Middle finger censorship

I rarely watch TV, but I've watched my fair share of police/law enforcement episodes. I noticed most episodes are based on either sex, violence, a combination of both, or drugs, which invariably leads to one of the first three options. All these aspects are presented quite vividly and explicitly.

I was half-watching a movie with Jim Carrey where he played a disgruntled reporter who despised his co-worker. He got really angry while on live television, and gave his co-worker the finger, which was covered by the censorship distortion square (what do they call those things anyway?)

Conclusion? The middle finger is considered by some more taboo than guns and drugs. I thought censorship of certain words was ridiculous, given the lenience towards the significantly more serious themes, but censoring the middle finger is just straight-up nuts!
